William Milberg is the Arnhold Professor of International Cooperation and Development at the New School for Social Research and Director of the Heilbroner Center for Capitalism Studies at The New School.

My research focuses on the relation between globalization, income distribution and economic growth, and the history and philosophy of economics.  I teach courses in international trade, microeconomics, economic history, and the political economy of the corporation

For a recent project at the Heilbroner Center, I edited two volumes on the relation between economy and democracy. One is “Beyond Neoliberalism and “Neo-illiberalism” (in The New). The other is “Challenges of Democracy and and the Future of Capitalism” (in Social Research). Current projects include “Towards a New Democratic Political Economy” and “Recalibrating US-China-India Economic Relations.” My book, “Bounce: The Story of Globalization” (The New Press) is forthcoming in 2026. An earlier book on international trade (with Deborah Winkler) is Outsourcing Economics:  Global Value Chains in Capitalist Development (Cambridge University Press).  My book The Crisis of Vision in Modern Economic Thought (Cambridge University Press) was co-authored with the late Robert Heilbroner.

I serve on the Editorial Board of Politics and Society and The International Labour Review, the International Review of Applied Economics and the Journal of Post Keynesian Economics. I previously served on the steering committee of the group “Capturing the Gains from Globalization” based at the University of Manchester. I have worked as a consultant to the UNDP, the ILO, the UNCTAD and the World Bank and delivered the WTO Staff Lecture Series on global value chains and trade policy. From 2013-2023, I served as Dean of The New School for Social Research.
